At the beginning of the last century, Berlin-Weißensee had the honor of being the cradle of German cinematography. At the same time as in Hollywood, important masterpieces of film were created here. The studio where the first German expressionist film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" by Robert Wiene was shot in 1920 still exists today. Marlene Dietrich also began her career in front of the camera in a studio in Weißensee.
Through the associative type installation at the historical film location Weißensee we would like to remind of this important phase in the development of our city. By fading in and out individual letters in "WEISSENSEE" you can discover a variety of logical German meanings. The current state of discoveries is 45. Here is an amusing combination:
"WESSEN SEE IS WIE EIN WEIS WEIN SEE".
And so you can go on almost endlessly. To this day, we receive von-Fans photos from all over the world proudly displaying their WEISSENSEE shirt.
Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts hatte Berlin-Weißensee die Ehre, die Wiege der deutschen Filmkunst zu sein. Zur gleichen Zeit wie in Hollywood wurden hier bedeutende Meisterwerke des Films geschaffen. Das Studio, in dem 1920 der erste deutsche expressionistische Film "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" von Robert Wiene gedreht wurde, existiert bis heute. Auch Marlene Dietrich begann ihre Karriere vor der Kamera in einem Studio in Weißensee.
Durch die assoziative Schriftinstallation am historischen Filmstandort Weißensee möchten wir an diese wichtige Phase in der Entwicklung unserer Stadt erinnern. Durch das Ein- und Ausblenden einzelner Buchstaben in "WEISSENSEE" können Sie eine Vielzahl logischer deutscher Bedeutungen entdecken. Der aktuelle Stand der Entdeckungen liegt bei 45. Hier ist eine amüsante Kombination:
