MARCAL: INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE SYMPOSIUM – SPAIN

MARCAL, Calatorao´s marble association, organizes the public and monumental sculpture Simposium in order to improve the sculptural and artistic development of Calatorao´s Stone museum, property of Calatorao´s local government.

MARCAL, integrated both by the varied quarrying enterprises from Calatorao (Pymcasa, Gramablack y Ania) and the town hall, would like to promote a public monumental sculpture contest in the aim of promoting our popular local marble, as well as with the objective of improving artistic and cultural development in this area.

ORGANIZER INSTITUTION:

Marble Association Marble from Calatorao, located in Calatorao, is the organizer institution.

OBJECTIVE:

Simposium´s aim is to create Calatorao´s stone sculptures. The stone will be provided by the organizer institution. Works must be unpublished and originals and they will be located in outdoors museum ´Calatorao´s stone´. Work development, from September 30 to 6 October , 2024.

The contest will be based on the following statements:

PARTICIPANTS

Any artist from Spain and all over the world can take part in this contest, no matter where they come from. Works will be realized by individuals.

Each artist will be able to work just on one piece of stone. Therefore, it is just allowed to present one sculpture to the contest.

The topic for the works is free.

ECONOMIC AID FOR PARTICIPANTS:

The sculptors that will be selected to participate in this contest, will get an 900 euros economic aid.

Artists must take into account that this fund includes the following concepts: idea, design, photographs, the work creation.

The organization will pay for the sculptors´ stay and food during the simposium (from September 30 to October 6, 2024). The organizer will also provide the sculptors the means of transport from Zaragoza to Calatorao from September 29 to October 7.

All the honorarium given to the artists will be subjected to the taxes according to Spanish law.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Projects must be original and unpublished, not selected nor awarded in any other contest or competition, and they cannot be a total or a partial copy of others already built or in process.

Authors can use any technique for the design and the creation of the work that they consider more useful in order to achieve their expressive goal.

Calatorao´s stone will be the material used for creating the sculpture. The organizer institution will donate to the sculptors, at the work place, a piece of stone from 0,50 m3 and not more of 1,5 meters length.

Aditionally, it is allowed to use two other elements, apart from Calatorao´s stone, such as strings. Anyway, those elements must be a secondary part from the sculpture.

The organizer institution will provide the selected participants with a civil responsibility and accidents assurance.

Sculptors will have light connection, but they must bring the other tools they might need. Each day, the organizers will help the authors to move the piece of stone if necessary.

Sculptors willing to participate must follow all the security rules and EPIS such as, security shoes, gloves, glasses and face mask at least.

WORKS PRODUCTION

Works creation.

Simposium works will be created from the 30 of september to 6 of October.

Works will be developed at the different quarries of the village, at specific areas.

They will also have to work at a public square.

Works will have to built between 8.30 and 19.30 or 20.30, depending on the artists needs.

The blocks will be adapted to each of the proposals of the five sculptors.

Each Quarry will provide two blocks of stone appropriate to the proposals of the sculptors.

If the artist wants to include any other additional material, he/she will have to provide it.

Artists will have to bring their own tools.

The rough down of the stone of the works will be done at the quarries, with appropriated machines. But after three days, sculptures will be brought to a public square where there will be a special area defined to continue with works´development, so that people can follow how the artists make their job.

Deadline

Artists will have to hand in their works to the organizer institution the 6 October at 20h.

The organizer institution will bring them to the place specified for it and they will be shown to the audience (7th october)

Sculptures will be carried to Calatorao´s Stone Museum.

PRIZES

There will be two honorable mentions:

From the Jury. It will be given after Jury´s deliberation.

From the audience. It will be given after audience voting.

MENTIONS

All works will become part of Calatorao´s Town Hall collection, and they could be displayed at the outdoors Calatorao´s Stone Museum.

PROPERTY RIGHTS

Winning works will become Calatorao´s town hall property and they will also keep author´s intellectual rigths. Authors will not receive any other quantity in terms of rights compensation appart from the 900 euros they will receive as defined in this document.

MARCAL Association will have the right of promoting the publication and exhibition of all the works presented to the simposium, and will keep the right of reproducing them in any other material in order to promote the contest.

HOW TO APPLY:

Each participant can fill in the application form on the Internet.

Completed application forms must be sent to the mail address asociacionmarcal@gmail.com within the June 30, 2024.

Attached with the application form, participants must send their artistic CV, as well as pictures of the design (elevation, profile and plant) they are willing to create at the simposium and five other photographs from other marble or stone works, describing material a measures in order to discover their experience.

Application forms can be filled in both in Spanish and English.

At the end of the applying period, the Jury will choose the participants in one month. Its decission will be irrevocable.

The Jury will choose 5 sculptors at maximum to participate in the simposium.
