The Online Club: Bodytalk - Natural Bodies
From beehives to wool: new visions of the human figure
Since the beginning of mankind, people have created human figures, trying to understand who we are. Today, with the widening gap between humans and nature, artists materialize our bond with nature with wood, bees, and sheep’s wool.
Birgit Maria Jönsson (DE), artist and bee carer, adopted the name Apisculptor. For 30 years, she has transformed tree trunks into wooden figures with beehives inside, following a centuries-old tradition. Once created to scare off honey thieves, today, when 85% of all insects have disappeared, she transforms them into guardians of the bees.
Stefanie Ehrenfried (DE) creates human figures out of sheep’s wool, as an embodiment of our relationship with nature. The dynamic shapes suggest the rich interplay of forces within and around our bodies and, at the same time, challenge the materialization and economization of our lives.
The Online Club Bodytalk - Natural Bodies is part of a series, preluding Sculpture Network’s International Forum, Bodytalk - The Return of the Human Figure in Contemporary Sculpture which will be held from 29 - 31 October in Berlin.
