Studio Pescarella
Studio Pescarella opened in 2002 after three months of intensive renovations, as an international sculpture studio in Pietrasanta, Italy. Three of us, Neal Barab,
Lotte Thuenker and Jaya Schuerch, manage the studio as partners. Our goal was to create a studio for professional stone sculptors, equipped with the tools necessary to do small and large works of art in a cooperative and creative environment. The studio was once a marble saw yard and is next to a marble factory and other artists' studios.
Pietrasanta is located near the marble quarries of Carrara, at the foot of the Alpi Apuane next to the Mediterranean Sea. There is a long and rich history of carving marble here since even before the Romans. Michelangelo came here to pick out his marble. Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Max Bill, Louise Bourgeois, just to name a few, all spent time in this area, working and having done work for them.
Today, it is a thriving center for artists from all over, who take advantage of the easy access to stone of all kinds, artisans, tools and equipment. We have space for 12 artists. At the moment, there are 6 people working permanently and we have 6 spaces for visiting artists, who stay anywhere from 1 month to 6 months and more.
