This medal honors the Fraxinus excelsior, the Common Ash tree. Working with wood, I sought to translate a traditional bronze medal, which honors individuals, into a contemporary medal celebrating nature. The sculpture mimics the falling motion of a helicopter seed.

The Common Ash is one of the most planted tree species in the Netherlands, shaping our landscape and contributing to biodiversity. Sadly, the species is under threat due to the invasive Ash dieback fungus. Since 2010, this disease has spread rapidly, affecting 82% of the Ash trees in Utrecht by 2017.

The medal, with its interactive design, invites viewers to explore and engage, symbolizing the human curiosity and responsibility toward the preservation of this endangered tree. It can be opened and manipulated, allowing the user to shape its form and meaning.
