Of grandeur and grace - Maillol and Sintenis

The exhibition «Of Grandeur and Grace - Maillol and Sintenis» at the Oskar Reinhart Collection «Am Römerholz» brings together sculptures, prints and drawings by two influential artists at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Aristide Maillol's (1861 - 1944) quietly harmonious masterpiece "La Méditerranée" is viewed in the context of his oeuvre and in interaction with the work of the most popular German sculptor of the 1920s in Berlin: Renée Sintenis (1888 - 1965). In addition to mutual appreciation and astonishingly similar projects, the two were linked by their common patron - Harry Graf Kessler.

Once created for the unsteady cosmopolitan Harry Graf Kessler, Maillol's monumental figure "La Méditerranée" enchanted the cultural elites. Using selected objects from Maillol's oeuvre, this volume traces the development and after-effects of this sculpture and creates a richly contrasting dialogue with the mostly small-format animal sculptures, female nudes, etchings and prints by one of the most important German sculptors of classical modernism - Renée Sintenis.
