Competition type

The competition will be held as an anonymous, restricted, single-phase art competition to design the Denk-Ort (monument - contemplative space) for sexual and gender diversity with a preliminary international open application procedure. The competition procedure is based on the Richtlinie für Planungswettbewerbe (RPW 2013). The competition languages are German and English. The required services will be communicated with the competition text in the further procedure. Participants in the competition will be selected from the applications received in the preliminary application process. The selection committee for the application process is not identical to the jury for the subsequent art competition. Both established artists and established artists from the LGBTIQ* community will be invited to take part in the art competition. The awarding authority encourages the formation of interdisciplinary working groups under the leadership of artists (e.g. with architects, landscape architects, historians, philosophers, etc.).

Purpose and aim of the art competition

The Ministry of Culture and Media will create a monument site for sexual and gender diversity at the Neuer Jungfernstieg/Lombardsbrücke. In September 2023, the Hamburg City Parliament passed the Drucksache "Denk-Ort sexuelle und geschlechtliche Vielfalt", thus enabling the realization of the Monument for Sexual and Gender Diversity (Drucksache 22/12602). The Denk-Ort (monument - contemplative space) is intended to create a place for the appreciation of ‘diversity‘ and the remembrance of their exclusion and discrimination. It is intended to commemorate the facts of stigmatization and persecution and also the suffering of non-heterosexual people and people outside the gender dichotomy. At the same time, the monument site is intended to create a prominent space for all members of the LGBTIQ* community and encourage encounter, respect and acceptance.

Competition area

The green space Neuer Jungfernstieg/Lombardsbrücke on the Binnenalster is available as a site for the monument. As a result of the art competition, the sculpture "Windsbraut" (marked red in the graphic) by the Hamburg sculptor Hans Martin Ruwoldt (1891-1969), which was erected on the edge of this area in 1968 on behalf of the building authorities at the time, can be moved to another location. However, it can also be incorporated into the artistic design.

Realisation sum

A total amount of up to 300,000 euros (gross) including all costs for artist’s fees, material and production costs as well as incidental costs is available for the realisation of the monument site.

Competition fee and prize money

Each participant who submits a work meeting the competition conditions will receive a competition fee of 3,000 euros (gross). In addition, a total prize money of 6,000 euros (gross) will be awarded; 3,000 euros for 1st place, 2,000 euros for 2nd place and 1,000 euros for 3rd place. Further details will be provided with the Invitation text of the art competition.

The jury for the art competition is made up of an equal number of representatives of the communities, the Hamburg Art Commission and the Hamburg authorities with 9 voting judges:
