Arts Council Collection

About Us

The Arts Council Collection is the most widely circulated national loan collection of modern and contemporary British art. Founded in 1946, the Collection reaches the broadest possible audience through long loans to public institutions, exhibition loans, touring exhibitions, as well as digital and print publications.

The Collection supports artists in the UK through the purchase and display of their work, and safeguards it for future generations, using the highest possible standards of collection care.

Operating as a ‘museum without walls’, the Arts Council Collection is the largest national loan collection of modern and contemporary British art in the world, and includes important examples by all of the UK’s most prominent artists. It is the most widely circulated of all of Britain’s national collections and can be seen in exhibitions in museums and galleries across the UK and abroad. Unique among national collections, the Arts Council Collection also lends to numerous public buildings across the UK, including schools, universities, hospitals and charitable associations.

Acquisitions

The Arts Council Collection supports and promotes British art and artists by acquiring works at early or critical stages in artists' careers. With a focus on innovative work made by artists living in Britain, our acquisitions policy is characterised by a spirit of risk taking combined with an informed appraisal of current practices.

Recommendations to acquire works are made by a changing group of external advisors to the Arts Council Collection Acquisitions Committee. The Committee researches artists and makes recommendations from within and beyond established gallery networks and are responsible for including the most innovative and progressive works, ensuring a broad range of artists are considered each year.

The Collection at Longside

Longside has been home to sculpture in the Arts Council Collection since 2003. Located within the grounds of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the centre at Longside enables us to extend our sculpture conservation and research programmes, and to increase public access to a sculpture collection of more than 800 works.

The collection team based at Longside develops exhibition and interpretation programmes and facilitates loans across the UK and abroad to ensure that sculpture in the Arts Council Collection is accessed by the widest possible audience.

Longside Gallery

Designed by Tony Fretton Architects, Longside Gallery is a unique space for sculpture, offering panoramic views of Yorkshire Sculpture Park through its glazed walls.

The Arts Council Collection and Yorkshire Sculpture Park share Longside Gallery for an alternating programme of innovative exhibitions.

Between exhibitions, Longside Gallery is used for a range of educational and outreach activities and events.
