Chillida in Barcelona: Discover Eduardo Chillida’s works in the city

Guided tour with Imma Pueyo – art historian and critic, teacher, writer, and painter

Join us to discover the works of the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida in Barcelona.

The universal Basque artist Eduardo Chillida (1924–2002) needs little introduction. Many of us immediately think of large-scale public sculptures such as Peine del Viento XV (1976) in Donostia–San Sebastián or Elogio del Horizonte (1989) in Gijón. Many have also visited the Chillida Leku Museum in Hernani.

Barcelona, too, is home to exceptional works by Chillida, which we will explore together on a guided tour with Imma Pueyo.

We begin at Parc de la Creueta del Coll with Elogio del agua (1987), a 54-ton concrete block suspended by steel cables, its powerful silhouette reflected in the water below. The park, a former quarry, also features Totem (1987), a corten steel sculpture by the American artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015).

Walking through the El Coll neighbourhood, we will also discover aspects of its history: an old bus stop, a passageway built in 1922, the Sansalvador House (designed by architect Josep Maria Jujol), and the Marsans House.

We then take a bus to the city centre to see two more works by Chillida. At Plaça del Rei, we encounter Topos V (1985), the first of his works installed in Barcelona, placed in connection with a major exhibition at the Miró Foundation. This seven-ton steel sculpture subtly suggests semicircular arches and the letter “B” for Barcelona.

Our walk continues near MACBA, where we will see Barcelona, Mural G-333 (1998), a monumental mural (15.5 m long × 6 m high) made of 416 concrete slabs in black and white, forming abstract shapes.

On the same wall is Keith Haring’s mural Todos juntos podemos parar el sida (1989, restored in 2014). In the same square, we will also encounter Jorge Oteiza’s sculpture La Ola (1998), part of the MACBA Collection in public space.

We end the tour with time to eat together and continue the exchange informally.
