Emerging Sculptors Mette Sterre and Menno Hiele
Sculpture Network is delighted to present the emerging sculptors Mette Sterre and Menno Hiele, who enrich the language of sculpture with visceral performances and dynamic installations.
Through sculptural body masks and theatrical performances, Mette Sterre (b. 1983 in Delft; lives in Amsterdam, NL) investigates what it means to be human in an era where our physical bodies are no longer fixed and increasingly merge with technology. Using organic and artificial materials such as ceramics or rubber, and experimenting with robotics and prostheses, Sterre transforms the body and brings matter to life in challenging performances, playfully questioning the viewer who we are, or what we want to be. Mette Sterre studied Performance Design & Practice at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. In 2021, she graduated from the prestigious Postgraduate Rijksakademie of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Manifesta Biennale in Kosovo, the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, the Prague Theatre Design Quadriennale, the Watermill Center in New York, and other venues.
The oeuvre of Menno Hiele (b. 1988 in Utrecht; lives in Zeist, NL) is dedicated to trees, giving nature a voice in an environment dominated by technology. He combines wooden structures with living plants and hoses filled with flowing water and fertilizer, reminding us of the invisible sap stream within plants.Previously working as an arborist, Hiele often had to cut down trees affected by disease. As a homage, he photographed the bark and reconstructed the skin of the tree in wood with the help of computers and CNC milling. Menno Hiele graduated from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. He has exhibited in the Netherlands and Japan and has completed commissioned works.
