The Wound in Its Entanglements
Regarding human beings as part of an expansive material network, her work traces the lines of Western intellectual history to ask how the ideas of human exceptionalism relate to the health and ecological disasters we face today, and what seem to be their implications for material bodies. More recently, Graff has begun to extend her research into mental health, examining the environmental risk factors that influence mental states, and the socioeconomic and physical environments shaping mental distress.
Her solo exhibition at Kunstinstituut Melly pairs this more recent inquiry with longer-term bodies of work, which investigate related notions of inflammation, immunity, and liquidity as thresholds positioning the body within a larger system. The resulting artworks each comprise a combination of ingredients that have, in one way or another, been linked to the chronic diseases and states of inflammation of our times.
