Marijan Mirt

L’Homme-colonne I & II

Context

The genealogy of the works begins during Mirt's 2023 residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. He observed street bollards that were functionally integrated into the city yet visually differentiated by deformation, repainting and coded details. Three smaller anthropomorphic bollard-like figures came first; two were later selected and enlarged to approximately 2.30 metres.

Formal / Curatorial Note

Enlargement fundamentally changes the status of the form. What initially belonged to the scale and logic of an urban object becomes a vertical bodily mass in direct relation to the viewer. The body is reduced almost to a monolith: arms are absorbed into the torso, legs act as an extension of the principal vertical axis, and the head remains the least reduced anthropomorphic element.

The silhouette is therefore not built through gesture but through slow shifts in width and contour. Long, relatively calm planes alternate with eroded edges and fissures, so light describes the structure of the vertical rather than anatomical detail.

When the two figures stand together, their relation is produced not by narrative action but by distance, shared scale and minimal differences in posture. The original question of integration and non-integration — of the person, foreigner or artist within an environment — is transferred from iconography into the relation
