aka 'Symbiosis', carved Gosford sandstone (Private collection, Germany)
This is my first sandstone carving. The division through the middle of the stone, with one half white and the other ochre, gave me the idea of creating Yin and Yang in three dimensions. Yin and Yang wrap around and interlock with each other, with opposing colours for their heads and tapering tails: one has a white head and ochre tail, while the other has an ochre head and white tail.
I made a tiny, rough plasticine maquette to work from. Instead of polishing the surface, I retained the scutch-comb texture.
