Reinventing the Wheel

assemblage with carved salvaged Huon pine, wax, dividers, fabric, vintage Ford Model T wheel and tyre, doorbell, and drafting paper

The sculpture assemblage is inspired by the idiom 'to re-invent the wheel' and the figure with the compass in Raphael's fresco The School of Athens. I used my husband’s hand as a model. Carving the gap between the thumb and index finger to match the thickness of the divider leg was a challenge. The growth rings of the slow-growing Huon pine are so close together that they resemble fingerprints.
