She’s Not Here, Not There, But Somewhere In Between

The work reflects on dying as a passage between presence and absence. Shaped by the isolation and vulnerability of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work gives form to the need for care, protection, and connection at the threshold between life and death.

She’s Not Here, Not There, But Somewhere In Between presents a human-sized figure lying on its side, covered by white quilted wings. The body appears suspended between presence and disappearance, protected by a soft covering that suggests both care and passage.

Hands rest on the figure, each cast from a different person in the artist’s life. Together they evoke the loved ones who may accompany someone at the end of life. The work approaches the body as a site of transition, held between life and death, solitude and connection, the earthly and the spiritual.

The sculpture was formed through a collective process with members of the Dutch Quilters Guild. Hundreds of individually made wings were sent in, each carrying traces of its maker. Some contributors passed away before the work was completed.

Through quilting, the work connects domestic craft traditions to collective memory, care, and embodied history. Developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it reflects on vulnerability, isolation, loss, and the need for protection.
