Citadel

Citadel is installed on the grounds of an estate in Portola Valley, California where its is at home among the landscape of the Valley.

Citadel is a tall, vertical form carved from a single block of titanium travertine. The stone has dramatic natural striations running through it, warm browns and creams layered over thousands of years, so the surface reads almost like wood grain or sedimentary rock.

The shape rises from a broad base and narrows as it climbs, with carved recesses and a single circular opening near the top that lets sky and light pass through. There's something ancient about it. It feels like a standing figure, or a watchtower, or a fragment of a cliff face that broke off and kept standing on its own. The surface is left with some of the stone's natural texture and pitting, which gives it a roughness that makes it feel honest and unforced.
