upwind gate

2025

Commissioned artwork for the entrance of Otterlo (NL)
Municipality of Ede / Kröller-Müller-Museum

Site: new public park at the intersection Harskamperweg / Apeldoornseweg, connecting the roundabout with the town of Otterlo and the Kröller Müller Museum. Built from the same bricks as the surrounding buildings.
Material: bricks, cement, metal, paint, polystyrene

We have experienced many storms in Otterlo. Sometimes, entire sections of forest have been razed to the ground as a result of such storms. And yet, after a few seasons you can see new, green life growing out of the ground again.

This strong wind was also a source of inspiration for landscape artist Cornelia Konrads. After all, sailors don't always have a tailwind. They also sail “upwind”. This means that they tack to keep the wind in the sails and still progress against the wind. However, this requires more attention and effort. She translated this reflections into an artwork that can now be seen when driving into Otterlo from the roundabout. An entrance that bends with the wind, while remaining steadfast.
