Meta

The municipality of West-Betuwe commissioned me to create the sculpture ‘Meta’.
The sculpture was inspired by archaeological excavations carried out in the village of Meteren, which uncovered a settlement from the Iron Age. The most remarkable find was the remains of a woman who had been buried (rather than cremated like others) and who had been laid to rest with beautiful jewelry. The archaeologists named her ‘Meta van Meteren’.
My ‘Meta’ became a three-and-a-half-meter-high female figure made of Corten steel. She seems to rise from the ground between piles of sand, braiding rings in her hair. The rust-brown steel is reminiscent of the Iron Age.
