Unfired Clay/Soil/Barbed wire
My work is inspired by Siluva and its dedication to the Mother of god, Mary. All images of Mary portray her as a mother holding a child yet she is also referred to as the Virgin Mary. The female body undergoes significant changes in order to contain and deliver a child. There are 7 clay forms, embedded in soil and linked by barbed wire. The clay form represents the burgeoning womb; the soil represents the mortality of the humans and the barbed wire alludes to the sorrows of the Mother. From a distance, the installation would appear like a rosary with 7 beads.
She is Waiting/Ji laukiasi
This performace alludes to the first signs of water breaking to make way for the birth of a new life into this world. The female body contains and nurtures the child within at great cost to herself. She is compromised before, during and forever after by the experience of birthing. The wet footprints on the ground are visible fleetingly to remind the viewer, we all are pilgrims in this world.
