Molecular

Molecular reflects on humanity as part of larger natural and social systems. The sculpture consists of bronze spheres inspired by schematic models of atoms and molecules: the particles that form the building blocks of life. These elements move through different states of being, becoming part of plants, animals, humans, or material objects. In this continuous cycle, human life is connected to families, generations, communities, and ecosystems.

The work grew out of a participatory process in the ProfBurgwijk. Van den Berg drew on conversations with local residents, neighbourhood magazines, and publications about the history of the area. Stories of community life, family bonds, and local pride became part of the work’s visual language.

Commissioned by the neighbourhood association on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, Molecular brings together local history, scientific imagination, and the idea that all forms of life are part of an interconnected whole.
