Meyke de Leeuw
I’m fascinated by Earth, nature, landscapes, and how humans interact with them. As human activity increasingly reshapes our surroundings, I often feel alienated from the landscape. Through my work, I express this disconnect—sometimes with affection, sometimes with criticism—while seeking to reconnect and highlight the tension between harmony and contradiction in our environment.
Human diversity and vulnerability inspire my art. Subjects include the elderly, refugees, people in waiting, loved ones, and my own migration to Belgium. Works like Shame1, Emmy, and Past Antwerp reflect these themes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I created pieces such as The Three Windows, Corona Reveries, I want to break free! and Corona Leporello. My techniques and materials are diverse and experimental, evolving in response to each concept and reinforcing its message.
