Catrin Lüthi K
Bausicht / Landschaffung
About the work of Catrin Lüthi K
In her current work the artist explores urban environments and their architectural elements. Her approach is to analyse areas of a city for their overall structure and specific buildings. With time the city’s processes of development and growth become revealed and have inspired Lüthi to explore the theme of transition in her work. Often her method of work begins with familiarizing herself with a particular locality and then making photographic scetches of her observations. The scetches, typically capturing aspects of a city such as destruction and excavation, assembling, layering, gaps, boundaries and territories, are used to develop three dimensional objects and site specific installations. She uses raw materials: concrete, plaster, wood, cardboard. Her use of these reflects systems of construction. Their surface texture tells of non-disclosure and timelessness. Often in her works an oscillating ambiguity between the 2nd and the third dimension is evident. (Art Historian Simon Baur: “Her work forms a thought without concluding it, constructs objects without disconnecting them from their suggestion, develops ideas without limiting the associative fields, and at the same time always allows to pretend the opposite, to develop new theories and to start again from the beginning and the end.”)
