Luise Kimme: The art that nobody wants

Luise Kimme (1939-2013), a native of Bremen and former professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, lived on the island of Tobago for over 30 years - initially in her lecture-free time, since 2002 constantly. In this deliberate seclusion from the Western art business her works emerged, shaped by the iconography of the Caribbean island and myth world. The exhibition shows a German sculptor who moved between 1965 and 1975 in the middle of the Anglo-American avant-garde in London and New York, but in 1980 radically departed from it and found her own style of form. The artist made colorfully painted, ornament-rich sculptures, characterized by the exotic color world of the South Seas. On display are late sculptural works and early works that were considered lost, so that the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus presents the artist's first retrospective on her 80th birthday.
