Cave of Invisible Reflections
Fibre glass, steel, LED lights.
Reaching high into the sky, Cave of Invisible Reflections stands on the threshold of balance, grasping upwards as if uncertain whether to rise or fall. Its angular lines reframe the heavens, while its semi-transparent misted surface seems poised to dissolve into the ether. Conceived as a dynamic cave, the work invites the viewer, landscape, and sky to merge—sublated in the very act of contemplation — and in so doing it anchors the intimate connection that links community and nature.
SSG was invited to create the monumental 14-metre-high Cave of Invisible Reflections for the opening of the Beidaihe Da Butong Installation Park in China in 2024, where it remains permanently installed. Clad in a translucent fibreglass skin, the work reflects and diffuses light, producing rainbows of reflection over the glass-like surface in daylight. A surface through which hints of its internal steel frame glimmer through, mapping its structural rhythm and adding depth to its form. At night, integrated neon lighting transforms the piece into a glowing beacon, its ethereal presence animated by shifting hues. The interplay of fibreglass and exposed steel brings a Constructivist edge, while the illuminated sculpture becomes a focal point for gatherings, particularly during nearby music festivals.
