Savako

Savako specializes in sculptures made of fiberglass from clay models, and then painted. Her sculptures are characterized by their colorful and playful forms, which look like ancient civilizations, but with a contemporary pop.
Inspired by the shapes of mountains, clouds, and flowing rivers seen from her studio, the lushness of trees, and the gestures of living creatures, the forms are all lively, optimistic, and fun. Her motivation is the emotions of childhood. So adults who see her work will remember how they felt when they were children. And children will have their imaginations stimulated and input the shapes in their minds. Savako hopes that through her works, people will be inspired to see the bright spirit within themselves.

Artist name Savako, real name Sawako Ando, was born in Chiba, Japan in 1968. After living in Tokyo, she now lives in Oita City in the Kyushu region of southern Japan, where she works daily on her sculptures in a studio on the suburb. Savako is a self-taught sculptor.
In Japan, in 2012, Savako surprised the locals by making an 8-meter diameter UFO suddenly appear in the city. Then, in 2015, it won a purchase prize at Sculpture by the Sea in Denmark and was installed in a park in the city. In 2017, two more of her sculptures were installed permanently in the Sculpture Park in Billund, Denmark, and in 2021, Savako won the Kids' Choice Award at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, and her work was

Hello Golem “Oto”
“Oto” and “Togen” have permanently been installed at Sculpture Park Billund, Denmark. My studio is at the foot of a mountain that is full of nature. I wished that there should be some spirit-like presence among the surroundings of plants, insects, bird’s voice and fresh air, the sculptures that took shape from that wish, I named them golems.

Portico Popilyn
Portico comes from an unknown planet. It was 2000 when I first produced Portico. Since then, I have been making Portico of various sizes as my lifework. I have let people “encounter” Portico in different places, such as on the top of mountains, on the beaches, and even on urban streets. Those who are pleased with Portico can get a small‐sized one. The owner would take Portico to a trip with him/her and enjoy taking photos. Seeing how they take it as a part of their life motivates me to work on producing Portico again.

Dream of Cyprus
I am in search of universal forms that can be traced from ancient times to the future. The flowing shapes of clouds, the unevenness of stones, the lush forest, the expressions and gestures of living things, and all the phenomena of nature are my sources of creation. I believe that creating is like an adventure that can transcend time and place without the constraints of convention.
