Announcing The Reopening of Caol Ruadh Scottish Sculpture Park presenting sculptures by Kathy Bruce

Kathy Bruce is a international environmental artist based in Scotland. In tandem with Scotland’s Year of Stories 2022, the theme of her sculptures at Caol Ruadh, are inspired by the Children’s book “Three Ladies Beside the Sea” by Rhoda Levine illustrated by Edward Gorey. These Edwardian heroines came to Bruce’s mind as she reflected on the dramatic setting of the gardens, house and sea views at Caol Ruadh, high on the hills above the Kyles of Bute. Bruce has created site-specific bamboo and willow sculptures on the park grounds to correspond to the features of the landscape. Her practice is a response to the natural environment that reflects on particular geographic sites within the context of poetry, literature and mythology. The natural organic materials  bamboo and willow was cut locally from Caol Ruadh and the Ardintinny Walled Garden. The emphasis of her sculptural work evokes the mythologies of women in Nature.

“Three Ladies Beside the Sea” is her first one-person exhibition in Scotland. The three sculptures were built on site at Caol ‘Ruadh between May 17-June 18 2022. Bruce is a member of Visual Arts Scotland, her work was exhibited in the 2022 VAS “Reverb” Exhibition. She has created installations internationally in the US, UK, Senegal, Taiwan, France, Denmark, Peru and Canada.
