Thomas SchĂĽtte

The exhibition at the Georg Kolbe Museum comprises around 30 sculptures and numerous works on paper—including some from 2021. They all address the visual regime of artistic traditions and modes of representation, describe the complexity of cultural-historical dynamics and identities, of images of the unstable self and its social resonance space, the group.

It is not least the exhibition venue with its direct reference to the context of Kolbe’s erstwhile artistic activities here that make Thomas Schütte’s multifaceted oeuvre tangible in a new way. Through unsuspected dimensions, it enriches the historically informed and topical narratives of perhaps the most important German sculptor of our time.
