Save the forest!

Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) is still an important source of inspiration for many artists today. That is why large-scale celebrations are being held in Germany to mark the centenary of his birth. Museum Het Valkhof has chosen to take part by throwing light on the legacy of Joseph Beuys. The exhibition shows how fifty years ago Beuys profiled himself as one of the first eco artists, and how he has inspired other artists all over the world.

In times of climate change, more and more artists are focusing on our relation with nature, especially with forests. Some mourn the suffering of nature and try to heal it. Others meticulously document the loss of virgin forest and woodlands all over the world. There are also artists who advocate action.

Artists are often pioneers. They show us that we have to act. The message of the eco artists of Rettet den Wald! Save the forest! Red het bos! is crystal clear: we are not superior to nature. We depend on it. Get involved, get inspired, do something: every tree makes a difference.
