THE WALL / Between freedom and dictatorship

Gisela Weimann: Konjugationen / ĂŒber das Irren
(In the German language, the word has several meanings that revolve around human failures)

"I conjugate the 'erring‘ through all persons and cases, in the indicative, in the subjunctive, as imperative and as interrogation. During this linguistic preliminary study it became even clearer to me that not only I, but also you, he / she / it, we, you, they, that all are wrong, have been wrong, will be wrong."

Gisela Weimann looks back on unceasing artistic work for many years. The subject between freedom and dictatorship challenged her to a process-like research. The artist has always worked with multimedia, records her experiences in the form of diary notes, interweaves collage-like text, images, drawings, photos and her 'found objects' from literature and philosophy.

Based on the verb 'to err', Weimann started her retrospective and incorporated historical and self-experienced periods in her large-format mural. The verb ‚irren‘(Middle High German) and ‚irri‘(Old High German) mean to be lost or confused, but originally it also meant: to move quickly, violently or aimlessly, i.e. to be in a rage. Today we also often use ‚err‘ to express an error without falling into insanity. Weimann's work revolves around all these social and thus also personal conditions that have been and are triggered by changes in political events and moral shifts in value judgments.

"I was born in the war, since then it's about a constant alternation between freedom and dictatorship, it's about morality, the ongoing uprooted wandering of many millions of people in this, my century, the senseless destruction of life and culture, the greed for power and money - and of course about me and my searching wandering around."

In her wall covering 'Die Wand / Konjugationen / ĂŒber das Irren' Gisela Weimann addresses 'Linientreuheit' (in the German language it adopts a critical note in the sense of following regulations and oders with questioning), analyzes fluctuations in value "Heute Held, morgen Schwein, warum soll es dies Mal andesr sein“ (Hero today, pig tomorrow, why should it be different this time), addresses the morality of the heart with a Henry David Thoreau quote, reveals reflective notes and also allows relativizing voices and statements to be heard, such as by Friedrich Nietzsche:
"Life is the precondition of knowing. To err is the condition of life, that is to err in the deepest sense oft he word. Knowledge of error does not cancel it out! That is nothing bitter (...)"

From personal experiences, insights from others, quotes, traces of contemporary history, revised image materials, photos, drawings, literary texts and diary notes, the artist creates an illustrated wall of contemporary history that fluctuates around the human ‚Irren‘ (being wrong) and ‚Herumirren‘ (wandering around in search for a place to stay).
