OUR LEGACY I

The Kunstpraktijk presents the first edition of the exhibition OUR LEGACY on Sunday 09.09.2018, 15.00 hours

A duo exhibition with visual work by Tessa van Helden and Robin Gerris

Opening word by poet, artist Huib Fens, in which he recites from his own work

Both artists, each in their own way, reflect on the problems and the role of the photographic image in contemporary society. They work with archival material and old photographs. This is in contrast to the speed of the digital age and the visual culture we are currently in. With this, they want to facilitate a moment of reflection and contemplation for the public, where the viewer can think about past times which now play to the future, thanks to the artworks shown.

Tessa van Helden - 1995, Academy for Visual Arts and Formation Tilburg -
The main part of a photograph is the representation that is depicted on the carrier. For Tessa, this performance is the starting point for creating images. Through the use of various traditional and new techniques she filters out unimportant details and Tessa unravels the image of a specific event or moment in history and knows how to give the essence of the performance a renewed value and meaning in the present.

Robin Gerris - 1988, Academy for Visual Arts and Formation Tilburg -
A photo always makes us feel as if we have been there (Barthes 1961). However times have changed, where memories were first presented in physical albums, images are already shared online before the moment has passed. There is an enormous amount of circulating visual material online, visible in different formats and on different interfaces. Robin uses this visual material and reproduces and combines them with analogue and digital reproduction techniques. As a result, the images undergo a physically destructive process in which
various fragmented images arise that get far removed from their original context. The image is therefore more likely to be considered as an afterimage which evokes unsolicited memories from the viewer. Just like the taste of a petite madeleine dipped in a cup of tea, which reminds of days gone by (Proust, 1913).
